Per Sarah Wharton of Traveling Yarn:

“This collection is inspired by the kind of warm days and cool nights that can only be found in the desert. I have lived in Arizona my whole life, and while that wasn’t always the plan, the magic of the desert somehow keeps me here year after year.

The Five Cs are taught in Arizona schools to highlight the five most important aspects of the state’s economy and culture, and they are part of what has made this desert I call home a more hospitable place.

People are often surprised to hear that I really enjoy knitting sweaters, and while it may sound surprising, any Arizonan (especially a Phoenician like myself) will tell you that after experiencing triple-digit temperatures for 5+ months straight, when it dips into the 50s, it feels cold! That said, the best part of living in the city is that you can drive just 2 hours to find all types of weather, even snow!

Many of the colorways used in these patterns are a part of our Creosote Collection, which is nearest and dearest to my heart. These colorways are influenced by my home state and the smell of creosote in the desert after a long-awaited rainstorm. These are desert chic, nature-inspired colorways reminiscent of desert sunsets, summer monsoons, and the varied Arizona landscape.

In addition to our interest in modern Arizona history, we also have a deep appreciation and respect for those who came before us and the fact that the land that is now Arizona has been home to Indigenous Peoples since long before statehood. Their ongoing contributions to farming, environmental conservation, and art have created the modern American Southwest we know and love.
